The latest inflation data was released by Statistics Canada Tuesday morning.
The numbers showed the overall consumer rate index in Saskatchewan, or CPI held steady in June at 1.43 percent. While the overall number remained unchanged from the previous month, some numbers did have changes. Some of the biggest changes outside of the energy sector came with food and shelter, which were up 3.68 percent and 3.72 percent respectively.
Some prices did decline in June. The biggest was the price of clothing, which dropped by 4.45 percent year over year, and prices in June were 2.28 percent lower than in May. Energy prices also took a drop in June, falling by 6 percent from the previous year. Gasoline was also down, falling by 3.09 percent.
In the neighbouring provinces, things were closer to Saskatchewan in Manitoba than Alberta, and it wasn’t even close. The inflation rate in Manitoba was just slightly lower than Saskatchewan’s at 1. 39 percent. The inflation rates for food and shelter were also comparable. In Alberta, however, the rate of inflation was 3.04 percent, more than double Saskatchewan’s. Food and Shelter were up by 3.61 percent and 7.27 percent respectively, and gasoline was up by 7.04 percent.
The national consumer price was 2.67 percent, down from 2.9 percent in May. This is attributed to slower growth year-over-year in gasoline prices in most provinces.
