Grain elevators that dotted the landscape as prairie sentinels throughout the 20th century have dwindled in number to the point that those remaining have become focal points for tourists and photographers. In some cases, the once ubiquitous buildings fell to fire or just the ravages of time.
In other cases, the buildings were torn down to prevent fires or other dangers and nuisances. Such was the case with the lone remaining elevator in Meacham, and that’s become the focus of an artists’ display on now at the Humboldt and District Gallery, says Director Jennifer Fitzpatrick.
“On June 8th, 2021, the village of Meacham watched as the elevator that had been the backdrop of daily life was demolished for ceramic artists Bonnie Gilmore and Charley Ferraro. It meant the beginning of a creative exploration of the effect this event had on their own lives and the life of their community.”
The public is invited to join the two artists for the opening reception and artist talk for their exhibition, “The Meacham Elevator” on Wednesday, August 14 at 7:00 pm.
The artists’ statements note that “Bonnie’s ceramic tiles are sketches that convey the golden glory days of our province,” and “Charley’s fantastical sculptures resonate with the beholder, stories of fact, fiction and fun.”
The exhibition runs until September 20 at the Gallery. The presentation of this exhibit is made possible by funding from SK Arts and Sask Lotteries.
