The Optimist Club of Red Deer’s third annual Duck Race is raising funds for youth programming this weekend.

The club is hopeful to have 1,000 ducks in the race this year.

“They float down to the end of Discovery Canyon, and the first to cross the line, the person who owns that duck wins $5,000," said Les Trevor, President of the Optimist Club of Red Deer.

The proceeds raised from the race will be allocated to youth health and wellness, sports and education programs.

“The duck race is all about raising money for youth in our local community. We are a group of optimists, and we want to make sure we can do what we can for the community,” said Trevor. “It's all about helping youth and giving an opportunity that may not be available for them and simply just doing what we believe is very valuable work in the community.”

During the event, there will be children’s activities, a 50/50 draw, and a door prize draw for a children’s scooter.

Ducks are still available for purchase. The club is also looking for volunteers to help with the event. To volunteer, email Les Trevor at luckylt68@gmail.com.

The race is on Aug. 18. Participants are asked to arrive by 10 a.m., with the race starting at 11 a.m. at the Riverbend Recreation Area.
