The Watson Taekwon-Do Club is set for a new season.
Registration is next Tuesday (August 27), Wednesday (Aug.28) and Thursday (Aug.29) nights at the Watson Civic Centre from 6-8 pm.
With classes beginning after the long weekend in September, running three times a week, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Instructor Jeff Turchyn feels Taekwondo is a great way to build confidence.
“Taekwondo is a team sport, but it’s also an individual sport at the same time. Everyone is cheering everybody on, encouraging everybody but you’re working on your own pace to get to the next belt level, work towards that next tournament.”
Turchyn added, “we got a great tight group that everyone works together.”
Anyone over the age of four including adults, regardless of their skill are welcome to sign up.
Turchyn says the sport is adaptable to allow each participant progress at their own pace.
“You don’t have to be super good off the bat, you learn and adapt to your abilities.”
He noted programs not only in Canada, but also globally have adapted programs to allow people who have a form of a disability to compete and advance in belt levels.
Currently, Turchyn says the club in Watson is operating around between 15-20 participants, but added they would welcome additional individuals.
During the season, Turchyn says the Watson organization competes in about four to five competitions a year. Some events are held within the province, others are nationally and there’s also the potential for international competitions with the athletes travelling to the United States or Europe.
Even though classes begin following the Labour Day weekend, Turcyhn says the club offers a flexible schedule that allows competitors to begin their training at any point of the year, especially with harvest getting underway in the area.
