After a summer break, the Wakaw Warriors football team is ready to get back on the gridiron.
The team began practicing last week as they begin preparations for the 2024 campaign.
Head Coach Carter Haryett says there’s renewed optimism with the team with a change to the team’s coaching staff.
Former quarterback and Cudworth product, Dylan Borstmayer will be taking over the offensive coordinator responsibilities, replacing Darryl Dickson.
For a six-man roster, there will be plenty of depth for the Warriors with around 35 players set to suit up for the squad, of those players, seven will be entering their final season as Grade 12 players.
Haryett believes offensively, the Warriors should be able to put points on the board this year.
“Our offence will be strong, most our guys are returning, we’ve had few others who’ve grown a little bit over the summer and have stepped up to fill the vacancies we’ve had, and we got a unit of eight or nine guys that can roll in and do really good job.”
A few members of the Warriors squad took part in the U18 league with Saskatoon Minor Football with two players named to the Sask. U18 Selects team that played in the Western Challenge in Alberta.
With Wakaw emerging as one of the top six-man programs in Saskatchewan, Haryett wants the Warriors to maintain that status.
“It’s an expectation, we’ve made provincials and have gone far the last three years, and we expect to the same thing this year.”
In 2023, the Warriors advanced to the provincial semi-finals, where they were defeated by Watrous.
Wakaw will begin their season on Thursday, September 5 at home against Hague.
