A major project is now underway in the town of Wakaw.
The revitalization of the business section of 1st Street South started this week, with work beginning on the sewer lines in the 100 and 200 blocks.
Chief Administrator Officer Melissa Dieno says the town hopes to have repairs done to the water lines completed by the end of this fall.
Along with the sewer and water lines, the road will be repaved, new curbing and sidewalks installed, with new light standards will be added.
Dieno says some of the work will carry over into the spring 2025, due to the late start of the project, noting that when council approved of the project in February, they hoped to begin the renovations sooner than the fall.
She adds they hope the project is finished by the end of July of 2025.
Dieno explained the town council believes the temporary delays will be worth it for the community in the long run.
“Wakaw is a progressive community, and council made this one of their top priorities for improving our community, we’re looking for long-term improvements for the infrastructure in the whole town, and street appeal for our community as well for the amount of tourists we get from Wakaw Lake, we’re just seeing more and more people calling Wakaw home.”
