From September 16-22, Coaches Week acknowledges the vital role coaches play in the development of athletes and their communities. At Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS), this week highlights the dedication of coaches who contribute to the school's sports programs and student growth.

Across Canada, coaches—most of whom are volunteers—commit an average of over 120 hours each year to support sports. At Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS), Principal James Jones highlighted the essential role these volunteers play.

“A healthy school and community offer students the chance to participate in sports, and we’re fortunate to have a dedicated group of teachers and community members who give their time willingly,” Jones said. “They’re a vital part of helping our students grow and become better citizens.”

ECS has more than 10 sports teams, each requiring coaching staff. Jones noted that coaching teams typically consist of two to three coaches, often a mix of community volunteers and school liaisons.

“This volunteer group leads by example in our communities, and Coaches Week is a great opportunity to show appreciation for the positive influence they have on our students and school,” Jones said.

Saskatchewan’s Parks, Culture, and Sport Minister Laura Ross echoed that sentiment.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan with funding from Sask Lotteries,” Ross said. “Coaches play an influential role in developing athletes on and off the field. Their motivation and encouragement bring out the best in individuals, and we are grateful for their commitment."

Today, more than 20,000 trained coaches work with registered athletes across Saskatchewan, and over 1.8 million Canadians have received coach training nationwide. One in seven Canadians will coach at some point in their lives.

At ECS, sports are already in full swing for the fall season. “Our volleyball teams have already competed in several tournaments, our football team is well underway, and our cross-country athletes are training for upcoming competitions,” Jones said. “It’s exciting to see so many of our students back out and involved in a variety of sports here in the Estevan community.”
