Steinbach Regional is 2-0 to start the 2024 Winnipeg High School Football League JV9 season. Arkin Padron threw touchdown passes to Alex Horn and to Owen Medeiros as the SRSS shutout the River East Kodiaks 28-0 in Winnipeg. The Sabres defense was outstanding. Gian Harder had three interceptions including a pick-6, Pavel Tsialipka had six tackles for losses and three quarterback sacks while Cruz Greenham had two interceptions. Backup quarterback Mason Wiebe threw a late touchdown pass to Nathan Trudeau to put an exclamation mark on the Sabres second win of the season. Steinbach Regional's next game is Wednesday, October 2nd against the Huskies at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate.
Golf Manitoba's final event of the 2024 season takes place today at the Grand Pines Golf Club. 32 teams including Ted Froese & Elijah Durksen of the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club and Jody Fenton & Chris Warrack and Ryan McLean & Matt Fatouros of Quarry Oaks have registered for the Men's Four-Ball Championship.
The Winnipeg Jets will begin training camp today at Hockey for All Centre. The Jets training camp roster includes five goaltenders, 16 defensemen and 32 forwards. The 53 players have been divided into two teams (Team Lesuk & Team Neufeld). Winnipeg's first of six pre-season games is Saturday against the Minnesota Wild at Canada Life Centre. Camp will end Friday, October 4th. The Jets will open the 2024-25 NHL season on October 9th against the Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.
Canada will play its preliminary round opener against Finland when the 2025 World Junior Hockey Championship begins Boxing Day in Ottawa. Canada will compete in Group A with Finland, the United States, Latvia and Germany. Sweden, Czechia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Kazakhstan are in Group B. Following games against Latvia on December 27th and Germany on the 29th, Canada will play the United States on December 31st, marking the first time that the two teams have faced each other on New Year’s Eve since the 2017 World Junior Championship.
Scotland has agreed to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games that were in jeopardy after the state of Victoria in Australia backed out as host. Glasgow, which hosted the event 10 years ago, will do so again. But some sports will be dropped as the Commonwealth Games Federation aims to reduce costs.
