Cloudy with a chance of rubber ducks is the forecast for the Blackfalds region next weekend.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Lacombe and District will be hosting its first annual Rubber Duck Drop Fundraiser on September 28 at Sterling Industries Park (soccer pitch).

The event will take place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., with the duck drop taking place at 2 p.m.

Executive Director Brianna Berthiaume explains that 1,000 rubber ducks will be dropped out of a helicopter and whoever's duck lands closest to the target will win half of the money raised.

"We're really excited about this event because we know it's designed for the community so it's going to foster connections with families, local businesses, and just get individuals involved that believe in the power of mentoring," commented Berthiaume. "I think there's lots of different avenues that this will bring forward. We'll be able to maybe get more mentors on board, connect with more families that could utilize joining the program."

She notes BBBS serves over 400 matches annually in the region.

"Adding this new fundraiser is an initiative we need to continue to make that impact. When we're requested for expanding our programs or trying some pilot projects with our schools, that's where these dollars will go, straight back into mentoring. We're thrilled to be here."

Rubber ducks can be purchased for $10 each. All money raised will go towards free mentoring programs for local youth.

If you purchase a duck, you don't need to attend the drop event to win.

BBBS Lacombe & District is currently in the middle of its 40 Mentors in 40 Days Campaign. So far there have been at least 15 volunteer mentor inquiries. If you are interested in becoming a mentor you can give BBBS a call at 403-782-7870 or email: lacombe@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca.
