Thursday night’s matchup between the Wakaw Warrior and Shellbrook Aardvarks went deep into the night and the Warriors passing game went deep on several occasions on their way to a 62-32.
Warriors quarterback Griffin LeBlanc and Ethan Lizotte were able to connect for five touchdowns over 200 yards on those scoring plays alone.
A game that was originally scheduled to begin at 7:00, was pushed back to a 9:00 kickoff.
Even with the late start, the Warriors offence proceeded to get to work early in the first quarter with Nolan Holmes opening scoring on a touchdown giving the Warriors an 8-0 lead.
The LeBlanc-Lizotte connection extended Wakaw’s lead with a 40-yard touchdown reception, to push the Warriors lead to 16.
Shellbrook battled back in the second quarter thanks to a nine-yard touchdown from running back Kamden Shewchuk, cutting the Wakaw lead to 16-8.
But that was as close as the Aardvarks would get, with Lizotte pushing the Warriors lead back to two scores after he hauled in a 50-yard touchdown reception.
Isaac Frie extended the Warriors with a 30-yard touchdown run
The Aardvarks answered back thanks to a five-yard touchdown run from quarterback Aiden Tait.
But before the end of the first half, Wakaw’s aerial attack of Leblanc and Lizotte went to work with a couple of receptions, first a 10-yard scoring play, and then right before the first half ended, they hooked up for a 45-yard touchdown reception, giving Wakaw a 46-16 lead.
Wakaw’s special teams helped with the team’s offence on their first possession of the third quarter, as Holmes recovered a pair of onside punts since he lined up behind the team’s punter. Cohen Palchinski finished the drive with a four-yard touchdown run.
Shellbrook responded with a 30-yard touchdown from Tait.
In the fourth quarter the teams traded touchdowns, Lizotte capped off his spectacular night with his longest reception of the night, a 60-yard touchdown grab.
The final scoring play of the game was a 38-yard touchdown from Shellbrook’s Reagan Collins, making the final 62-32 in favour of Wakaw.
With the victory, the Warriors improved their record to 3-0, while the Aardvarks dropped to 0-3.
Wakaw along with the rest of the league will enter a bye week. Next action for the Warriors will be on Thursday, October 3, when they head to Hague.
