Estevan has a bit more sunshine left before winter comes and cuts those hours drastically, with the area usually getting plenty of light over the year.
That was the case this year as well, which included plenty of sunny weather especially due to the summer seeing below-average rain.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang says that measuring sunlight hours isn't a focus for them anymore.
"Well, sunshine hours are those hours that we used to measure that measured bright sunshine and we used to have these instruments called Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorders. They look like crystal balls and there'd be a piece of paper behind it and if it was sunny, it would burn the piece of paper. That's sort of how we measured the hours of sunshine."
"It's actually kind of interesting because we don't do that anymore. But some of those instruments are still floating around, it was kind of a neat way to measure bright sunshine. So, if it was cloudy, the paper wouldn't burn, but if it was sunny, the paper would burn through."
Back when those were measured Lang says that Estevan frequently was on the top of the list of sunniest cities in Canada.
"That actually has to do with where our position is in North America for one and Estevan particularly because it's so close to the border farther South than most places where we used to measure sunshine hours and the number one reason is that we don't have any big bodies of water around us."
"What the bodies of water do is, well, number one, they kind of regulate temperature. But the other thing they do is create a lot of clouds and fog and that type of thing that would block sunshine. So because Estevan is nowhere near any bodies of water, the sunshine is more prevalent there."
"The other thing is, of course, because you're farther South. You're going to get more sunshine than places, let's say, farther north - Prince Albert or Stony Rapids or anything like that, just where you're positioned closer to the South."
That geographical positioning also creates differing climates which leads to more sunshine for Estevan.
Lang noted that the sunshine hours that Estevan gets have made it an attractive place to install solar panels.
