The new Estevan Regional Nursing Home will have its sod-turning ceremony held tomorrow as work on the building is entering a new stage.
A new nursing home has been in the works for Estevan for over a decade, with the province recently taking a closer look at those and moving the plans forward.
Don Kindopp, chair of the new Estevan Regional Nursing Home committee, says seeing the new building built has been a long time coming.
"It has been a sort of a twisted route to get there, but we have arrived there and so it's a stated 129 new bed construction on the green space and that will meet the needs assessment of 167 long-term beds when you consider the 38 presently within St. Joseph's Hospital."
The sod-turning ceremony will be held in that green space, located next to St. Joseph's Hospital and across from Sister Rodday Road.
That begins at 10 a.m. with everyone invited to attend, with refreshments and visiting afterwards at Tom & Irma’s Cafe within St. John's Hospital.
Kindopp says that overall the journey has been a lot of work, with more detailed design planning going into the building next.
He hopes plenty of people can come out on Friday to celebrate all the progress so far.
"We invited everyone to come and join with us in the celebration, cause our citizens, citizenry and our businesses and our city governments have all contributed to our journey to replace the present regional nursing home. So it's time for the celebration of this milestone and the journey that we continue after that."
