Environment Canada says gardeners may want to watch for frost as temperatures are set to drop next week.

The current weather feels a lot like summer, but soon the southeast will be brought back to fall as next week sees a sharp drop in temperatures.

That comes as the month changes to October and even more leaves change colour.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang says that with the jet stream shifting we'll see temperatures closer to the usual cool weather of fall.

"What's happening is the jet stream is starting to sink farther South, and that's allowing for the weather systems to start moving through. Each of these weather systems will bring sort of that gush of cold air in behind it."

That cold air is likely to mean that the season will see its first overnight cold enough to produce frost sometime next week.

While the forecast remains clear as the temperature shifts Lang says it's likely we'll see a system form over those days.

"I'd be surprised if we didn't get clouds and rain with that. I think that is just because the long-range forecasts are computer-generated. Sometimes the computer doesn't necessarily see the clouds and the rain. I'd be surprised if we didn't see some shower activity with that and some clouds with that as well."

As the cooler air is shifting into the area Lang advises people to watch for that frost as it's likely to strike for the first time soon.

"To get that frost, we need the winds to drop right off and we need clear skies. Just kind of keep out for that, and if you have any of those plants sitting out that you still are enjoying, maybe a tomato plant you might sort of think about getting ready to cover those up."
