The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins have yet to see their first win of the season but got close in their recent match against the Melfort Mustangs.

The Mustangs had a strong start in the first periods, going up 2-0, with the Bruins only managing to get one in the third period and failing to catch up.

Head Coach Jason Tatarnic believes that the team did well despite the scoring deficit.

"I thought we played really well in the first period. Unfortunately, we went down one nothing, especially after you watched the game over on video, we had more grade-a chances than they did in the first, but they went into the [period] with a one-nothing lead."

"I thought the first 10 minutes of the second, Melfort was the better team and then after that, we kind of took over and had a great second half of that period. Then obviously the third we outshot them 16 to 3. So overall I thought we played pretty good and I thought we deserved a better fate."

Tatarnic says that the defence has been strong with just a couple of pucks trickling by to get those goals.

"It's not so much defensive hockey. It's just a couple of mistakes here and there that we made and you know in the earlier game with Melville we just made some constant mistakes, and I think our defenses zone and our mentalities, they're just putting it all together. We have the capability of being a real stingy hockey team if we want to be so and I think that's what you'll see more of."

As they prepare for their next game against the Nipawin Hawks on Friday Tatarnic says the team will be working on their powerplay to help capitalize on those more often.

"The powerplay, we got to look at that and give out some work for these weekend games coming up and that will be a focus of practice this week and justĀ  working on what we're working on five on five."

The Bruins play the Nipawin Hawks at 7 p.m. on Friday at Affinity Place, followed by a game with the Flin Flon Bombers on Saturday at 7 p.m. also at home.
