In a significant boost to local law enforcement, the Estevan Police Service has been awarded an additional $467,000 through provincial policing initiatives. Announced last Friday, this funding is set to enhance community safety and increase police visibility on the streets.
The funding includes provisions for three new officers, which Chief Jamie Blunden emphasized would have a positive impact on the community. “Anytime you can put an extra officer on the street, it’s just going to bring a lot more safety and visibility to the streets as well as hopefully reduce crime,” he stated.
With a focus on pressing issues such as mental health and addictions, Chief Blunden highlighted plans to enhance the Police and Crisis Team (PACT). Currently operating with one officer and two Saskatchewan Health Authority workers, an additional officer would allow for full coverage seven days a week. “We certainly like to look at our community and some of the drugs that are here,” Chief Blunden added, emphasizing the importance of addressing drug-related crimes alongside mental health support.
Another area that could potentially benefit from is a school resource officers, a role that holds significant importance in building trust and relationships with students. Reflecting on his own experience, Chief Blunden remarked, “Policing is about relationships. It’s about the relationship with the community, the relationship with our board, and the relationship within the police service.” He noted the importance of having officers present in schools to foster connections with youth, stating, “I think having somebody in the schools is a pretty important and crucial part.”
Chief Blunden also addressed the issue of organized crime in the region, particularly in relation to drug activities. He explained, “When you look at organized crime, you don’t have drugs coming in here without an organization that’s involved with crime.” This highlights the need for a specialized approach to tackle larger investigations that go beyond the capabilities of regular patrol officers.
Having recently joined the Estevan Police Service, Chief Blunden expressed enthusiasm about engaging with the community. “I’m absolutely loving to be here,” he said, looking forward to building strong relationships moving forward.
In expressing gratitude for the new funding, Chief Blunden acknowledged the collaborative efforts with the provincial government, stating, “We’re pretty happy with that from a Saskatchewan perspective overall.” This funding decision reflects a commitment to ensuring that smaller municipalities receive the support they need to maintain public safety.
