It was rumoured to be a possibility before the SJHL season started. Two of the top forwards from the 2023-24 season, Jerome Maharaj and Jaxon Ruthven, would be coming back to the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings. In the offseason, Maharaj went to the Langley Rivermen of the BCHL, while Ruthven went south of the border and joined the Aberdeen Wings of the NAHL.
Wednesday afternoon, the Red Wings made the announcement - the pair were coming back to The Opportunity City.
Last season, the pair were offensive dynamos for the Red Wings. Over the course of 51 games, Ruthven would pick up 49 points as a 19-year-old, including 17 goals. Maharaj would average a point a game, scoring 20 goals and adding 36 assists.
The news came a day after the Red Wings announced two other acquisitions made via trades with teams in the AJHL. It was announced the Wings acquired 06-born forward Lynden Donald-Gorman from the Camrose Kodiaks, and 06-born forward Turner McIntyre from the Drayton Valley Thunder.
Fans are hoping to see the four in the lineup this weekend as the Red Wings play a pair of games at Crescent Point Place. Friday, they host the Flin Flon Bombers, and then they entertain the Nipawin Hawks on Saturday.
