The Swift Current Comp. Colts pushed the top-ranked Greenall Griffins Saturday afternoon at home but ultimately came up short in their final game of the regular season.
Five different Greenall players found the endzone in a wildly windy contest as they downed the Colts 39-14 to remain perfect on the season. Griffins receiver Rogan Pipko had a team-high 96 yards (71 receiving and 25 passing) and a touchdown and running back Shane McDougall rushed for 82 yards including a touchdown.
"That is a very good football team and our guys battled," Colts Head Coach Derek Murdoch told Country 94.1 post-game. "It starts with a really good first quarter, we score first and everyone's excited... You take away that second quarter, I said it to the guys - you're not allowed to do that but pretty even outside of the 17 points they got there."
Swift Current receiver Nate Siemens opened the scoring by catching an 11-yard pass from quarterback Owen Sletten with 2:33 left in the first quarter. Pipko responded two minutes later with a 61-yard receiving touchdown to tie the game up.
Griffins Conor MacLennan recorded a pick-six on the last play in the first quarter giving Greenall a 14-7 edge.
Greenall quarterback Chase Kee called his own number late in the second quarter on a 12-yard rushing touchdown making it 22-7. McDougall also found the endzone just before halftime stretching their lead to 30-7.
A quiet third quarter, set the scene for both sides to trade touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Griffins quarterback Jake Steranko scored on a 16-yard run and Colts running back Jake Woods counted with a one-yard rushing touchdown of his own finalizing the score at 39-14.
Woods had a massive game registering 127 yards rushing on 24 carries.
"He is really good at making a read and making a real quick cut near the lineman," he said. "He is a big piece for us and on a day like today where it's tough to complete passes, you have to rely on those guys."
The Colts finished the season 1-5 and appear poised to host the Estevan Elecs on October 19 with the winner moving onto the Tier II Championship game.
