The Red Deer Rebels overcame a slow start to beat the Calgary Hitmen 5-2 at the Peavey Mart Centrium Saturday night.

Red Deer’s fourth-straight win puts the team in first place in the WHL Central Division and tops in the Eastern Conference.

The Rebels opened the scoring less than three minutes in when Steven Steranka squeezed a puck past Eric Tu for his first WHL goal.

Calgary would reply on the power play when a shot from Reese Hamilton found its way past Rhett Stoesser.

Red Deer retook the lead three minutes into the second period when Cohen Poulin tipped home a pass from Matteo Fabrizi for his second goal of the season. Steranka assisted on the goal for his second point of the night.

Ollie Josephson made it a 3-1 game with a power play tally 10:47 into the second period.

Just over four minutes into the third, Fabrizi gave the Rebels a 4-1 Rebels.

The Hitmen would add a power play goal late.

Carson Birnie sealed the Rebel's win with an empty-netter to make it a 5-2 game.

Red Deer goaltender Rhett Stoesser stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced.

The Rebels are back on home ice Tuesday, October 8 versus the Vancouver Giants starting at 7 p.m. The following night the Rebels head back to Medicine Hat for yet another matchup with the Tigers.
