The upcoming provincial election needs a few more workers for the Estevan-Big Muddy Constituency.

Provincial elections are getting closer for Saskatchewan with those set to take place close to the end of the month.

The work of a provincial election takes a lot of people, with workers going to municipalities all over the province to make sure votes are counted properly.

This year the Estevan area is seeing a stronger need for those workers, with Elections Saskatchewan Spokesperson Tim Kydd explaining where the gaps are.

"We need election workers to work for the voting week, which is October 22nd to 28th. In particular, the last day of voting. Those first five days we have early voting locations in four different centres in the Estevan-Big Muddy constituency and that last day we have about 19 locations around the entire constituency and we're a little short of workers still there."

"We're looking for people to work as deputy returning officers, poll clerks, and information officers, basically just to help ensure that the voting in person goes smoothly, it's very easy to apply. Anyone interested can just come to the website, Elections.SK.ca, it's a completely online application process, so no need to e-mail in a cover letter or resume or anything like that. It's an online application and we're certainly interested in anyone who may be able to work for us in Estevan-Big Muddy."

Kydd says that these paid positions have plenty of spots open with plenty of shifts as well.

"We have 56 hours of voting this general election that week of October 22nd to the 26th, at the four early voting locations. There's a bit of setup and then it's working for the entire shift. You may be an information officer greeting people. You could be a registration officer or you could be one of the workers who checks you in off the voters list, hands you a ballot, and makes sure that you drop it in the ballot box when you're done."

Even for people who can't work throughout the week of voting Kydd says that any time they can spare is very welcomed.

"We're looking for both workers who can work the entire week of voting week at one of the early voting locations in Estevan, Midale, Radville, or Tribune. But as well that final day of voting, we have about 19 locations. All the way from Bienfait in the east to Minton and Radville in the west part of the constituency."

Kydd says that this is an opportunity for people to get connected with their local community and earn some extra money.

"The election is coming up quickly. There'll be a few hours of training that everyone attends and it's important to remember that these are all paid positions. This isn't volunteer work. These are paid positions and an opportunity for someone to earn a bit of cash, but also to meet some of their neighbours, reconnect with friends, and serve democracy in Estevan-Big Muddy."
