Estevan Fire Rescue had a tough few days, with heavy winds leading to multiple calls coming in all around Estevan.
The first of those was reported on September 30 around 7:30 a.m., when a crew was dispatched to a possible fire southwest of the city. After the crews responded they found that no fire was occurring and that any appearance of fire was due to heavy dust in the area from high winds.
On the morning of October 3 at around 11:15 a.m., a crew was dispatched to another report of a grass fire south of the city. This time when responding the crews confirmed a fire was taking place and were able to quickly extinguish it without incident. No damage or injuries were reported with the cause of the fire under investigation.
Another call for a commercial fire alarm came in later that day around 5:30 p.m. in the Northeast area of the city. Crews responded and found the alarm was cooking-related with no emergency occuring.
The next day on October 5 at 4 a.m., a crew was dispatched to another commercial fire alarm in the Northwest area of the city. When crews responded they found that once again no emergency was occurring, chalking that up to a possible issue with the alarm system.
Later in the day the winds began to gust, with a call coming in around 11 a.m. for a tree on a powerline in the south end of the city. After responding and confirming the location, crews stood by until SaskPower arrived. They cut down the branches and crews extinguished the fire.
The winds didn't stop with another call coming in at noon, just when the crew was finishing up the previous call. Another tree had fallen on a powerline a few blocks away, with crews responding. Branches were again removed by SaskPower and the EFR crew extinguished the fire.
Another call came in soon after of yet another tree on a powerline at 12:45 p.m. in the north end of the city. Crews responded and confirmed the tree was down with no fire occurring. Crews were waiting on the scene for SaskPower before receiving their final call of the day.
To cap off the windy conditions, at 1 p.m. EFR received a report of a grass fire south of the city. Crews responded and confirmed a fire was occurring, before quickly getting the fire under control before it spread. The fire was extinguished with no injuries or damage, with the cause under investigation.
Estevan Fire Rescue will also be holding an open house tonight in celebration of Fire Prevention Week at their station from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
