The Winnipeg Jets opened their 2024-25 season in spectacular fashion, shutting out the Edmonton Oilers 6-0 thanks to a standout performance from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.
The Jets blocked an impressive 29 shots, and the scoreboard lit up with contributions from six different goal-scorers: Adam Lowry, Mason Appleton, Rasmus Kupari, Dylan Samberg, Kyle Connor, and Mark Scheifele.
Hellebuyck, returning to the team after a brief absence, notched his 38th career shutout. He was particularly sharp in the second period, stopping a crucial series of chances from Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid and Viktor Arvidsson.
Lowry line sets the tone
Winnipeg’s checking line, anchored by Adam Lowry, Mason Appleton, and Nino Niederreiter, was pivotal throughout the game. Lowry broke the deadlock late in the first period, battling through the Edmonton defence to put the Jets up 1-0. Moments before the period ended, a precise pass from Niederreiter allowed Appleton to double the lead.
"That line can do everything," Hellebuyck told reporters after the game. "Tonight, they showed their chemistry and versatility."
The line combined for seven points, with each player adding offensive punch while keeping Edmonton’s top players in check.
Key saves bolster Jets’ offence
Hellebuyck’s critical saves at the start of the second period helped maintain Winnipeg’s momentum. His denial of McDavid’s close-range shot, followed by a reflex stop on Arvidsson’s rebound, paved the way for the Jets to extend their lead. Within 20 seconds, Rasmus Kupari scored his first goal as a Jet, followed by a Dylan Samberg strike from the point, putting Winnipeg ahead 4-0.
Lowry credited Hellebuyck’s resilience. "For him to come back after being away for personal reasons and still play like that — it’s a testament to his focus and dedication."
