After more than two weeks of City Hall calling for nominations in the Estevan Civic Elections and 17 candidates submitting their intention to run, the ballot is now set. The City Clerk's office has confirmed that no candidates dropped out of the race in the upcoming elections. Here's the list of candidates you will be voting on:
Mayoral
- Anthony Sernick
- Zaccharius Wade Vandenhurk
- Rebecca Foord
City Councillors
- Shelly Veroba
- Robin Wog
- Brian Johnson
- Kirsten Walliser
- Kevin Andrews
- Stephen Daniel
- Mathew Dubowski
- Tom Mauss
- Dave Elliot
- Rhyan Hagel
No elections will be held for the board trustee positions for the school divisions, as both have two nominees each. Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division will see Craig MacDonald and Kevin Keating represent Estevan. Virgilito Sotto and Karren Melle will speak for Estevan's schools in the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division board.
This year, the ballot will also have a plebiscite attached - a non-binding question to gauge the voting population's opinion. The question reads as follows:
Would you support the construction of a third indoor ice facility in the City of Estevan?
- Yes
- No
The previous council ensures the public that no matter what the outcome of the plebiscite is, nothing will be done until the issue is brought up with the new council. It is to simply ask whether the community would support another ice surface in Estevan. The question was raised by Councillor Anthony Sernick at the August 19 council meeting.
