Team Canada, represented by Shaun Meachem, Kelly Schafer and Chris and Teejay Haichert from the Swift Current Curling Club, defeated Ilknur Urusan and Team Türkiye 9-7 in an extra end in the opening draw of the World Mixed Curling Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland on Saturday.
Türkiye started the game with last rock and jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a single in the first end and a steal of one in the second before Meachem and Team Canada picked up two in the third end to tie the game up. Türkiye was forced to one in the fourth before Canada scored a single of their own to keep the game tied 3-3 after five ends.
Urusan and Türkiye started pulling away with three in the sixth end and a steal of one in the seventh to go up 7-3 coming home, but Meachem and company rebounded with four in the eighth to tie the game and force an extra end, and then Canada wrapped up the opening draw victory with a steal of two in the ninth.
