Team Canada, represented by Shaun Meachem, Kelly Schafer and Chris and Teejay Haichert from the Swift Current Curling Club, saw their quest for gold at the World Mixed Curling Championship come to a heartbreaking end after an upset loss to the Netherlands in the round of 16 this morning in Aberdeen, Scotland.

In one of Canada's tightest games at the event, the two teams traded singles in all eight ends and the score was tied 4-4 after regulation. Meachem had the hammer in the extra end, but it was Simon Spits and his Dutch team who stole two points to take a 6-4 victory and knock off the unbeaten Canadians.

It is the first time since 2016 that Canada has failed to win a medal at the World Mixed Curling Championship. They have won the most medals all-time at the event with three gold, one silver and one bronze.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, will advance to face Japan in the quarterfinals later today. The semi-finals and medal games will take place on Saturday.
