In a nail-biting playoff matchup, the Humboldt Mohawks battled the John Paul II Crusaders of North Battleford, ultimately securing a 42-29 victory that showcased both teams' resilience and determination.
The Crusaders were first on the scoreboard as quarterback Nate Fransoo connected with wide receiver Ryder Kozlowski, at 5:34 left in the first quarter, marking the first score of the game.
The Mohawks quickly responded with a touchdown from Hudson Armstrong, who showcased impressive running skills to score from the 10-yard line. After a competitive first half, the teams were tied 14-14 by halftime, with both offenses displaying a mix of aerial and ground attacks.
As the second half began, the Crusaders initially gained momentum with a strong run from Fransoo, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run that put them ahead 14-7. After a quick TD response by the Mohawks, the offense went on the attack again with a swift drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Barrett Smith, regaining the lead at 21-14. Mohawks QB Liam Zimmerman demonstrated clear poise and athleticism throughout the game with both speed on the ground and a capable arm that often provided the Mohawks with a clear offensive weapon.
With 45 seconds left in the second quarter, the Crusaders’ quarterback found a gap and dashed into the end zone, tying the game once more at 21-21. The Mohawks, however, were undeterred. A final push led to another touchdown, putting them ahead 28-22 as the half closed.
The second half began with both teams exchanging blows. The Crusaders pulled within striking distance with a touchdown pass to Kage Koch. The Mohawks answered with a strong drive, capped off by a touchdown run from Gage Hoffman, making it 36-29 after a successful two-point conversion on a nifty pitch out play.
In a pivotal moment, Mohawks’ Colin Stock intercepted a pass from Fransoo, returning it for a touchdown. Although the extra point was blocked, the Mohawks extended their lead to 42-29.
As the game progressed, the Crusaders faced multiple setbacks, including turnovers and penalties, that hindered their efforts to close the gap. The Mohawks maintained their composure and held on for the win, solidifying their advancement in the playoffs.
With the victory, the Mohawks prepare to face Lumsden next week, as they continue their quest for the championship title. Coach Eric Anderson praised his team’s effort, noting the resilience they showed in a tightly contested game.
“They obviously looked at some film, they had us figured out in a few spots,” Anderson noted. “They doubled down on number 5, Barrett Smith, but the boys figured it out and got rolling.”
While the Mohawks offense moved the ball effectively, the defense turned up the intensity in the second half to contain the Crusaders.
“Our defense really levelled out and got a little calmer in what they were doing which made them much more effective out there.”
