The U14 Estevan Oilers’ hopes of reaching the league finals were dashed by the Weyburn Falcons, who claimed a 20-7 victory in a hard-fought matchup. Despite the loss, the resilient Oilers fought until the final whistle, scoring in the last minute of the game to avoid a shutout.
The Falcons opened the scoring early with a seven-point lead and extended it to 20-0 heading into the final minutes. The Oilers managed to get on the scoreboard in the last 45 seconds, pushing hard to score seven points.
Oilers head coach Christian Pfiefer commended his team for their perseverance throughout the game and the season.
“I asked them to play to the final whistle, and that’s exactly what they did. They didn’t give up,” said Pfiefer.
Heading into the game, the team also faced the challenge of losing their regular quarterback. Pfiefer praised the effort of Taya Stigings, who stepped in to fill that role.
“She made some really good throws, some really good reads, and she was running hard like she’s been doing all year as a running back,” Pfiefer said. “I can’t say enough good things about her. In the end, it just didn’t go our way.”
The Oilers have one game left in the season, where they’ll compete for third place in the league standings. Despite the loss, Pfiefer reflected positively on the season.
“They fought hard. At the end of the day, whether we won or lost, we put together a historic season for this age group, and that’s something to be proud of.”
