The Beiseker Lions Club has made another donation to STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Services), this time for $28,000.

For patients who are seriously ill or injured, STARS, a non-profit helicopter air ambulance organization in Canada, offers quick, specialized emergency care and transportation.

The funds were raised through their annual Beiseker Lions Club STARS Golf Classic. Alan Balson, Secretary of the Beiseker Lions Club, talked about how it went.

"It was a great time, we had 30 teams participate with four players per team. Everybody had fun. The event seems to grow each year we have it."

According to Balson, the reason they donate to STARS every year is because they have a special connection with the organization.

"STARS was originally started by a Lions member, so it is very near and dear to Lions member's hearts."

According to the STARS website, back in 1985, The rotary air ambulance program, initially named Lions Air Ambulance Service, was established, and the first mission was flown in December to transport a critically ill infant to tertiary care in Calgary.

The club has been doing the gold classic for nine years now and has raised around $200,000 for the organization.

"The $28,000 raised is enough for five trips. So it is something we encourage people to donate to."

The golf classic took play back in August, but the donation was made at the beginning of the month when STARS representatives were able to attend a Lions meeting.

"It's amazing that something like a golf tournament can raise $28,000 for such a good cause. Thanks to everybody who donated."

With over 1.4 million members spread throughout about 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and regions, Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world.
