Update: Jackknifed semi causes delays on QEII near Crossfield

The scene has been cleared after a jackknifed semi-trailer blocked the left southbound lane of the QEII Highway near Township Road 292, just north of Crossfield.

Alberta 511 initially reported the incident at 10:27 a.m. Monday. Traffic is now moving normally, but drivers are still advised to use caution as winter conditions persist.

Crossfield Fire Chief urges caution as spring approaches

After a recent grass fire, a nearby fire department is asking everybody to be fire-aware, as spring is just around the corner.

On the second to final day of February, the Crossfield Fire Department responded to a small grass fire in Veterans' Park located in the town. 

Bill Messner, Fire Chief for the Crossfield Fire Department, shared that what started the fire is still undetermined.

"When we arrived on the scene, it was already mostly out. We did some mop up just to make sure the there were no further hazards."

Update: Another car collision reported north of Airdrie as snow continues

A motor vehicle collision on northbound QEII near Township Road 292 has been cleared, and traffic is returning to normal as of Monday morning. The crash, reported at 9:35 a.m., occurred northwest of Township Road 285, near Crossfield.

Meanwhile, Highway 567 has reopened between Range Road 40 and Big Hill Springs Trail, west of Airdrie and northeast of Cochrane, following an earlier collision.

Help Crossfield score big: NHL game and arena upgrade on the line

The town of Crossfield is making a strong push for a $250,000 arena upgrade and the chance to host an NHL game as part of Kraft Hockeyville’s national competition.

Jennifer Watson, president of the Crossfield Skating Club, said the bid is about more than just renovations; it’s about creating lasting memories for local youth.

“Our arena needs upgrades, and this competition not only provides funding but also the opportunity to bring an NHL game to our community, that would be monumental for the kids, real core memory building.”

Rutabaga Bowl rolls into year 50 of Crossfield Farmers Market

Saturday kicked off the Crossfield Farmers Market season, which also means the 4th annual Rutabaga Bowl took place.

Cheryl Shea, the manager of the farmers market, was excited to kick off their 50th season.

"We had 90 Alberta food and beverage vendors attend our opening day. I think this is going to be a great year for farmers markets because it's the best place to find Alberta products."

When it comes to the Rutabaga Bowl (they use Rutabaga's to bowl), they had 28 adults step up to participate in the competition this year.

The contract for the Airdrie chapter of Alberta Pound and Rescue Centres (APARC) expires on March 31, 2025, and the City has yet to secure a permanent replacement. In the interim, Tails to Tell Animal Rescue in Crossfield confirmed that the City of Airdrie is financially assisting in housing stray cats. According to Colleen Holden, a Tails to Tell’s Board of Directors member, the arrangement may last six to 18 months.

At their meeting on February 4, the trustees of Chinook's Edge School Board discussed the spring budget process and created tools to help newly elected trustees succeed.

The Chinook’s Edge Board of Trustees reviewed an annual report outlining the division’s preparations for the upcoming spring budgeting process.

"The division has designed its process to prioritize fairness and transparency in the way resources are allocated. The Board supports the process," stated Chinook's Edge.

Update: QEII crash near Airdrie: Emergency crews on scene

A motor vehicle collision on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway (QEII) southbound lanes east of Crossfield has been cleared.

Drivers were previously warned of lane closures, no-passing zones, and significant traffic congestion.
