Several popular frozen waffle brands have been recalled due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, affecting products from Great Value, Compliments, and Western Family across Canada and the U.S.
TreeHouse Foods issued the recall, advising consumers to check their freezers and return or discard the affected waffles. Though Listeria can be dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and the elderly, no illnesses have been reported so far.
Consumers should take immediate precautions by identifying products using UPC, Lot Code, and Best By Date on packages.
- Do not consume: Even if the waffles appear or smell normal, they may still be contaminated.
- Dispose or return: Discard them or return them to the retailer for a refund.
- Clean up: Wash your hands, kitchen surfaces, and any utensils that may have come in contact with the product.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe illness, especially in people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and the elderly. Symptoms of Listeria infection include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, it can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.
Even though Listeria can be killed by cooking at high temperatures, frozen waffles are often lightly toasted, which may not be sufficient. Other prevention tips include:
- Wash fruits and vegetables before eating.
- Cook frozen foods thoroughly.
- Clean surfaces and utensils regularly.
- Monitor food recalls to avoid unsafe products.
A full list of affected products, can be found on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) website as well as on the company's website.
