The Edmonton Police Service says that 45-year-old William Mackinaw escaped after failing to report to work while on an authorized temporary absence.

On Oct. 19, just before 11 p.m. RCMP members were conducting patrols along 50th Street in Red Deer when they pulled over a vehicle and positively identified the passenger as Mackinaw. He was arrested without incident.

CSC and the Native Counselling Services of Alberta, which operates Stan Daniels Healing Centre, are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mackinaw is currently serving a sentence of 23 years for multiple offences, some of which are firearms-related
