The Estevan Legion's poppy campaign is set to begin Friday, with the money raised going to support local veterans.

With the annual fundraising effort again starting up, Estevan Legion member and veteran Craig Bird talks about what that money does for local veterans.

"All of the money that the poppy funds raised are used exclusively for Veterans Affairs needs and whether it be paying for veterans bills that they're in need, supporting veterans programs, mental health initiatives, housing, all kinds of things. So those funds are used in the communities or veterans that are in need."

"Believe it or not, we do have veterans that are in our communities and some of them are getting older and some of the younger veterans that have served in Afghanistan and with the Canadian forces on peacekeeping missions and that sort of thing. Every once in a while, they need help and the legion is one of those organizations that can reach out and help veterans. That's what that money is for."

For Bird, seeing people wearing the poppy is a reminder that the people who gave their lives for the country are being remembered.

"It's always nice to see people remembering and commemorating the service, Remembrance Day is more for the people that lost their lives in the service of our country. When people wear poppies in the community, it represents the people that served in and died from our community."

"We have quite a number as you can see on our cenotaph, we added names last year for those who died and those who need to be commemorated from our community and remembrance day just pays tribute to those people that paid the ultimate price."

For anyone looking to learn more about the community's history with Remembrance Day, a program will be held at the Estevan Comprehensive School beginning at 10:45.

Bird will be one of the speakers there, going over a key moment in Canadian military history.

"We're doing something a little bit different this year with the Remembrance Day program. I have a presentation as I toured over in Europe this year for the 80th anniversary of D-day and one of our local veterans made his way over there as well for the 80th anniversary calibration. Again, we're going to be doing something a little bit different this year, so people who want to see why we do our commemoration, that would be a good time to come out and do that."
