The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has concluded an investigation into a non-fatal officer-involved shooting during a residential break and enter.
On Sept. 21, 2021, the Red Deer RCMP received a call from an older adult stating that his stepson had broken into his home, which he was prohibited from attending due to a court-imposed condition.
Officers found the suspect inside the home, and followed him into a nearby bathroom, where they saw a knife.
One officer fired two-gun shots.

The suspect was arrested, with a single gunshot wound to the neck. He was taken to hospital where he received medical treatment and was released.
During an ASIRT interview, the suspect confirmed he put his hand on the knife, which was on his hip, and police saw the blade.
He also admitted he had taken methamphetamine before the police arrived.
Through ASIRT’s investigation, it was determined that the officer’s use of force was proportionate, necessary, and reasonable under the circumstances.
“There is no evidence to support any belief that any officers present engaged in any unlawful or unreasonable conduct that would give rise to an offense,” ASIRT’s report said.
