As winter approaches and temperatures drop, Alberta’s government is reminding residents that help is available to keep their homes warm and lights on.
The Winter Rules for Utilities are in place to protect vulnerable citizens throughout the colder months and ensure access to electricity and natural gas. From October 15 to April 15, utility providers cannot fully disconnect electricity and natural gas services, even during the coldest spells when temperatures drop below zero.
"During Alberta’s harsh winters, no one should be forced to choose between heating and eating," said Nathan Neudorf, Minister of Affordability and Utilities. "We’re keeping the lights on for the most vulnerable and taking action to lower power bills for all Albertans. I encourage anyone having difficulties with their utility bill to contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate and learn what options are available."
The Winter Utilities Reconnection Program aims to assist customers with disconnected services, ensuring they are contacted and helped to reconnect before the cold weather sets in.
This initiative is led by the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA), collaborating with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), utility retailers, and other government agencies. Those struggling to pay their utility bills or needing assistance negotiating manageable payment arrangements are encouraged to contact the UCA.
"The Winter Utilities Reconnection Program is an important protection for customers struggling with utility bills," stated Chris Hunt, Utilities Consumer Advocate. "UCA Mediation Staff are available to help customers get energy utilities reconnected and stay safe during winter."
Alberta’s competitive electricity market allows residents to choose the energy provider, plan, and payment option that best fits their needs. With over 50 competitive retailers, Albertans can select between fixed or variable-rate contracts.
Last year, many households transitioned from the Rate of Last Resort to competitive contracts for more affordable options. Albertans can contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate at 310-4822 via email or their website for assistance with utility bills or provider disputes.
