The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings extended their point streak to nine games Friday night, as they held off the Melville Millionaires for a 1-0 win. The victory bumps the Red Wings into third place in the SJHL, and they are tied with the Millionaires for the lead in the Viterra Division.
The game could best be described as a goaltending showcase, with Weyburn goaltender Angelo Zol turning aside 34 shots for his first SJHL shutout. At the other end, Nick Genette would stop 33 of the 34 shots he saved en route to the win.
The Red Wings' lone goal came from the stick of Liam Fitzgerald in the second while Weyburn was on their fourth power play of the game. His goal, which was his fifth of the season and was assisted by Braigh LeGrandeur and Dallen Oxelgren, at 14:39 would stand as the game-winner.
Zol would stand on his head in the Weyburn crease, particularly in the third period, where he stopped all 16 shots that he faced to preserve the victory.
The Red Wings will now look to keep the momentum and extend their point streak to 10 games Saturday night when they entertain the Melfort Mustangs at Crescent Point Place. The puck drops on the game at 7 p.m.
