Ella Nishida has become the first world champion of the Ippon Karate Dojo.

Representing Canada in Rhodes, Greece, she has claimed double gold at the WKU World Championships. Kian Quiambao, also of Ippon, won a silver and bronze medal.

"This is our first world champion under a world league," says Adam Wackershauer, chief instructor of the Cochrane karate dojo. "We've had Pan-American world medallist before for the WKF (World Karate Federation) but we've never had a world champion in the dojo yet.

"As you can imagine, it's exceedingly rare because one person per country gets for an event, but we're just super proud of Ella and Kian and I think we can expect really good things from them in the future."

The two haven't returned to Canada as of yet.

Athletes of the dojo have been leaving an impressive mark on the international stage in recent months.
