The Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre is changing its name to Sendero Centre as of November 1, 2024.
The term ‘Sendero’ translates to ‘path’ or ‘trail’ in Spanish. The new name will be accompanied by a new logo featuring a winding pathway which encapsulates the diverse healing journeys of individuals. The pathway in the logo is surrounded by orange and teal, evoking thoughts and feelings of optimism, renewal and empowerment.
“At Sendero Centre, clients navigate their own figurative pathways, moving through various stages from intake to counselling and support. We want the Sendero Centre to continue to be a place where clients feel welcome and feel empowered to choose the path that is right for them," said Executive Director, Patricia Arango.
The original sexual assault centre started in 1983 with a $35,000 government grant, a card table, a couple of chairs, and a phone. Over the past 40 years the agency has grown and changed by adding crucial programs such as the 24-Hour Support Line, youth and adult counselling services, the Police and Court Support Program, and education programs. The Sendero Centre is one of the few organizations in the region that provides these services at no-cost without requiring referrals, allowing for a seamless intake process.
Last year, the centre successfully supported and educated 22,921 individuals through 2,215 Support Line calls and messages, providing crucial resources such as 2,554 counselling sessions, 196 police and court support clients, and 816 education presentations.
