In his first-ever campaign for Swift Current, NDP Candidate Jay Kimball made lots of progress.
While this election has seen the re-election of Sask Party candidate Everett Hindley, Kimball managed to land 1,996 total votes for the NDP.
This is the largest amount of votes for the NDP in Swift Current since 2003 provincial election when Dean Smith had 2,707 votes, with 36.6 per cent of the vote, when he fell to future Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall.
In contrast, Kimball had 28.7 per cent of the vote.
While he may not have won this election, Kimball is celebrating the victory of making an impact locally.
"We have made more progress in Swift Current than we have for the last 20 years and we are so proud of what we've done," said Kimball. "We are listening to the people of Swift Current and it, it's not going to take that long until things change."
Kimball plans to continue his role as the NDP Swift Current member, looking to run again during the next election.
"We are going to continue to work towards change. We owe the people who have stepped up and cast their vote towards us a commitment to change and we will continue to work for the next two years, four years as long as it takes so that we can hold this government accountable."
Kimball credited his success in part to the Sask Party themselves. He stated that their record continues to show voters that the change promised by the NDP is necessary and needed.
"They have not been the best government for Saskatchewan. That's going to move the vote.
"We are on the doorsteps, relating to the people of Swift Current and they will find out step by step that we are here for them and we'll see it next time."
