Lacombe City Council has selected a potential location for the city’s new fire station.

After research and deliberation between regional and provincial stakeholders, the new station is planned for 4410 Woodland Drive, adjacent to the municipal cemetery and easily accessible to Highway 2A.

The location will undergo a formal planning and development process before final approval.

“Council is pleased to see plans for our new municipal fire station begin to take shape,” Mayor Grant Creasey said. “The location of our fire station is critical to keeping residents safe when they need it most, and this location was the first choice by the majority of our stakeholders.”

Nearly 20 locations were considered, with seven receiving a detailed analysis.

The review included more than 15 meetings and a stakeholder survey, indicating that 87 per cent of respondents selected the Woodland Drive location as their first choice.

Parameters that guided the selection process for each location included:

  • Response time performance

  • Safe location

  • Access to major roadways

  • Residential impact

  • Land availability

  • Future development impacts

To address residents’ concerns regarding lights and sirens, a new Standard Operating Guideline for the Lacombe Fire Department will be drafted to ensure emergency equipment abides by the Traffic Safety Act, and is only used during nighttime hours when necessary.

The city is also developing subdivision plans, a fire station design, and the final budget that will be decided during the 2025 Budget process. The development permitting process and construction are tentatively scheduled for next fall.
