The Crossfield Fire Department aims to empower women and encourage more to join its ranks through Camp Empower, a program scheduled for later this month. This initiative offers prospective female firefighters valuable insight into becoming a firefighter.
Crossfield firefighter Cynthia Niznik, one of five female firefighters in the department and a member for over three and a half years, recalls her initial interest in firefighting. While many of her male colleagues helped answer questions, they were not able to address certain female-specific concerns she had.
"There were always female-related questions I couldn’t ask them," she explained.
To find answers, Niznik contacted the Calgary Fire Department, seeking guidance from female firefighters who could provide insight into women's unique challenges in the field.
"It was such a fantastic experience and super friendly. I got to see their station, and it really helped make me more excited about a career in firefighting and answered all my questions," she said.
As she prepared for her physical fitness test with the Crossfield Fire Department, Niznik was aware of the challenges ahead. However, she admitted that the test surprised her in ways she hadn't anticipated.
Niznik noted that when recruiting applicants, only one or two female candidates often struggle with the physical tests. This struggle isn't due to a lack of capability but stems from the unique challenges women face that are not widely recognized.
"I just really want to do something that would help answer... and take the uncertainty and the unknown for women coming into the fire department," Niznik stated.
Participants at Camp Empower can expect a challenging workout that simulates the fire service fitness test. Attendees will also be able to wear structural firefighting personal protective gear and gain hands-on experience with firefighting tools and equipment through mini-training scenarios.
Niznik expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming event, which is designed to prepare potential female firefighters for the challenges of the fire service. The program will begin with a 20-minute workout that simulates the intensity of the physical fitness test, allowing participants to assess their fitness levels and identify areas for improvement.
"It's to prepare them for the fire service and to take away some of that unknown factor," Niznik added. "We've already had a few people reach out and express interest... which is really exciting."
Niznik hopes that more women will join firefighting departments soon because, as she expressed, helping the community is invaluable.
"I love helping people and wanting to find ways to make a difference," she said. "For every sacrifice I make, the reward and satisfaction that comes from it is 10 times worth it, and I definitely wouldn’t change it for anything."
This free event is open to women aged 18 and older. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact and reserve a spot for the camp before November 9.
