Q. Why are you running for mayor/council?
A. I’m running for City Council because I’m dedicated to making a positive impact in our community. My goal is to promote long-term planning that focuses on sustainable economic development, strong infrastructure, and vibrant recreational facilities, all while engaging residents. Recently, as I drove my young sons (an 8-year-old and 2 year-old) to my sister's house, I pointed out all the campaign signs and said I’m also running for Council so you will be seeing my name. My oldest asked what it meant, and I explained that it meant I love Moose Jaw. When I care about something, I give it my attention and work hard to improve it. I want to serve our community and advocate for its needs. My goal is to foster a community where everyone feels heard, valued, and empowered to shape our shared future.
Q. Do you have experience in public service/community boards/politics?
A. I have extensive experience in public service and community engagement. For over a decade, I've been dedicated to serving the public, leading various initiatives and policies in areas of community safety and well-being, and crime reduction, social services and most recently, agriculture. Currently, I serve on the Cultural Diversity Advisory Committee (CDAC), where I collaborate with stakeholders to address community needs. I also serve on my local church board.
Q. Do you think experience matters one way or another?
A. Yes, I believe experience is important. However, it’s equally vital to have individuals who can effectively drive policies for change. We need people who can ask critical questions about our community’s issues, connect with residents, and listen to their concerns. It’s essential to embrace innovation and technology and to be forward-thinking. Without this, we risk repeating ineffective approaches rather than finding new solutions that are based in evidence.
Q. What topic/policy issue/incident was the tipping point for you?
A. Every vibrant community has its own strengths and challenges. For our community to thrive, it’s essential to build on our strengths and actively involve a diverse range of residents in shaping our future. This means making the most of our local assets such as businesses, history, culture, and natural landscape/green spaces. Unfortunately, the current Council has not effectively tapped into these resources or engaged different groups in the planning process for our community’s future.
In my conversations with residents in the community, I’ve noticed a growing sense of disengagement, with many feeling that their voices do not lead to meaningful change. This situation is not conducive to a healthy community. It’s crucial that community members feel encouraged to participate in local issues.
Q. What criticisms do you have, if any, for the politics you've seen over the last two or three years?
A. I think the Council has not been very responsive and accountable regarding its decisions. Community engagement has been insufficient, and public input has not been effectively considered. There seems to be a gap in the Council's strategy for fostering meaningful participation in civic issues and processes- on critical matters in our community.
Q. What is your plan to compromise/cooperate with fellow council members to accomplish policy goals?
A. My plan emphasizes open communication, transparency, honesty and prioritizing the community's best interests. By actively listening to diverse perspectives, I will aim to understand each member's concerns and foster a culture of respect. I will seek compromises that align with our shared goals, ensuring our policies and decisions reflect a collective vision for our community. Ultimately, my approach focuses on collaboration and evidence-based decision-making to effectively serve our community.
Q. What else do you want voters to know about you?
A. I have lived in Moose Jaw for over 11 years with my husband, Jordan, and I’m passionate about building a community that offers opportunities for future generations. I believe in strategic thinking, open-mindedness, and the principles of servant leadership, honesty, and integrity. My career spans various roles in public service and non-profits, including positions as a Volunteer Coordinator, Policy Analyst, and Director in multiple ministries. I also hold a graduate degree in Public Policy from the University of Saskatchewan, equipping me with the skills to address complex issues effectively.
I want voters to know that I am dedicated to addressing the community's most pressing concerns. I believe in open communication and collaboration, and I’m here to listen to your ideas. Together, we can create a brighter future for Moose Jaw.
Q. In the interests of transparency, are you coordinating or do you share an association with any other candidates, in any way whatsoever?
I am not coordinating with or affiliated with any other candidates. My campaign is operating independently.
