Penner moves from council to mayor in Morse

The new mayor of Morse is looking to continue the work of his predecessor.

Former councillor Rocky Penner moved to the top job by acclamation after the retirement of George Byklum.

"I'm quite excited to become the new mayor," Penner said. "I know I have some big shoes to fill. Our previous mayor served for 12 years, and he did a great job. I know that I can always go to him if I have any concerns as well as talk to my Council.

New city council officially sworn in

During a special city council meeting on Monday night, Moose Jaw's newest city council was officially sworn in.

The meeting was opened by city clerk Tracy Wittke and started with James Murdock taking the oath of office to become the city's 42nd mayor. He was presented the Chain of Office by city manager Maryse Carmichael.

The six city councillors were then sworn in by taking the oath of office. The mayor and councillors were sworn in by Judge Brian Hendrickson.

Moose Jaw's new mayor outlines his future vision in inaugural address

Newly-elected mayor of Moose Jaw, James Murdock, addressed city council for the first time on Monday night during their inaugural meeting since last week’s civic election. 

Murdock started his address by emphasizing the importance of the right to vote, calling it our most fundamental democratic right. 

He expressed his gratitude to the 8,606 residents who voted, acknowledging their role in shaping the city’s future. 

Chinook School Division has new board chair

Dianne Hahn is the new chair of the Chinook School Division Board of Education.

The now three term trustee and former vice chair's nomination went unopposed. 

"I'm super excited to have the nomination of the board members to take the role of the chair going forward over the next year," Hahn said. "That is a very humbling moment. I must say it's a real honor to have that confidence from the other board members."

Hahn will bring some of the lessons she learned from previous chair Kim Pridmore into the role. 

Reflecting on low voter turnout in Swift Current election

The new Swift Current city council will swear in at a ceremony later tonight.

Mayor Al Bridal returns for his second term. He's joined by incumbents Ryan Plewis, Ryan Switzer, Leanne Tuntland-Wiebe and Tom Christiansen.

Tonight will also mark the return to council for Bruce Deg after he served from 2016 to 2020, and the first council meeting for newcomer Courtney Stewart.
