Parts of southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan are under snowfall warnings as a system moves across the prairies. With the forecast calling for precipitation in southeast Saskatchewan starting tomorrow, many are wondering if we will be getting as much snow here in the Weyburn area as Cypress Hills could get.
“It looks like areas to the west of the Weyburn-Estevan area will likely see more of that precipitation in the form of snowfall,” confirmed Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor. “We’re going to be flirting with temperatures right about 2 to 3 degrees, so we might see a little bit of mixed rain and snow on Tuesday night in the Weyburn-Estevan area.”
The system is also moving to the south, and that has Proctor calling for more of an impact in the Dakotas than in the Weyburn area.
If there is any snow that falls in the Weyburn area, it will likely stick to the ground, and not blow around. With daytime temperatures Wednesday back above freezing, and even warmer temperatures by the weekend, anything left on the ground will melt.
While this will be the first taste of winter, it won’t be the last, despite the temperatures we are experiencing right now, Proctor added.
“If we start looking at the longer range forecast, La Nina is really developing out in the Pacific at this point in time, so we’re definitely trending towards more seasonal temperatures as we move into later November and into December,” the meteorologist forecast. “We’ve really sort of been lulled in with a little bit of a false sense of security that all has been very nice for us and very easy at this point in time, but we’re definitely trending towards more typical conditions as we move later into November.”
