On October 30, 2024, Saskatchewan RCMP's North Battleford Crime Reduction Team – Gang Task Force executed a search warrant on Moosomin First Nation as part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation in the Battlefords area.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., officers entered the residence and seized a replica firearm, two rifles, a loaded homemade firearm, and various types of ammunition. They also confiscated around 45 grams of pre-packaged methamphetamine, small quantities of cocaine and suspected MDMA, as well as bear spray, a conducted energy weapon, and paraphernalia related to drug trafficking.
Seven individuals—two women and five men—were arrested at the scene. Among those charged was 41-year-old Nicole Poitras of Moosomin First Nation, who faces multiple charges, including:
- Possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine
- Unauthorized possession of firearms and prohibited weapons
- Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition without a license
- Unsafe storage of firearms
Poitras appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on November 1, 2024.
Also arrested was 23-year-old Lyle Night of Saulteaux First Nation, who had an outstanding warrant from the Saskatoon Police Service for possession of property obtained by crime. He has been released and is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on November 22, 2024.
Additionally, 41-year-old Malcolm Moccasin of Moosomin First Nation was apprehended on outstanding warrants from Battlefords RCMP for multiple charges, including possession for the purpose of trafficking, failure to comply with court orders, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Moccasin appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on October 31.
The other four individuals were released without charges following the investigation.
