Karla Wiens was able to sit back, relax, and enjoy her last SCBEX.
Wiens, who has been serving as the CEO of the Swift Current & District Chamber of Commerce since 2017, will be stepping down from the role at the end of the fiscal year.
As such, she took the time to really take in the largest event of the year that she and the Chamber organize, the SCBEX Awards.
So, last Friday Night, she took a more reduced role and enjoyed watching the awards being handed out from the audience.
"It was a real treat to be in the audience and to see people's faces instead of the backs of their heads," said Wiens. "There were some emotional moments up there this evening, which was really heartwarming."
Wiens credited Darrel Romuld for doing a wonderful job hosting. Normally, it would be her job to present for the evening, teeing up each presenter and congratulating them on stage.
"Romuld did a fantastic job," complimented Wiens. "He is a funny man.
"As this was my last SCBEX, I look forward to next year and the changes it will bring. Change is a good thing."
Wiens looks back on what she has accomplished over the last seven years and has trouble picking an exact moment as the pinnacle of the experience. However, she can tell you what the best part of the job has been.
"The most important thing would be the relationships and connections that I have formed with people in Swift Current and in southwest Saskatchewan," said Wiens. "And across the province, and across the country, because the chamber network is not just Swift Current and District, it's a national network, all connected."
For now, she is working towards wrapping things up and is awaiting the Chamber Board's decision on a replacement for her. When that time comes, she plans to offer what assistance she can to help whoever it is get comfortable with the job.
