Veterans Week is being recognized in the lede up to Remembrance Day.
As such, a flag-raising was held at Market Square yesterday.
The Local Legion Branch 56 was joined by members of the City of Swift Current, and MLA Everett Hindley.
Past President of the Legion Branch 56, Jim Pratt was happy to see
World War II Veteran, John Watson, raising the flag for the Legion. He was joined in the raising by Swift Current Mayor Al Bridal, and Legion Branch 56 Past President, Dave Boucher.
"We had a pretty good ceremony," said Pratt. "As guest speakers, we had the Mayor, Al Bridal, Ever Hindley our MLA, and MP Jeremy Patzer was not able to attend as he was in Ottawa, but his assistant spoke on his behalf."
Although not too many people attended the ceremony, those who did were grateful that the Legion was recognizing those who served, who are serving, and who have perished in the pursuit of Canada's interests.
"There very seldom is a lot of people there," said Pratt. "But the ones that are there appreciate the fact that we do observe Veterans Week by raising the flag in honour of those who have served."
Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, 2024, will include a ceremony at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park. Afterwards, people can join the Legion at the Legion Hall for a luncheon, followed by a service held at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School.
