A current town councillor has thrown his name in the hat to run for mayor of the Town of Herbert and is keen to bring a fresh outlook to the table.

Born and raised in Swift Current, Ron Becker and his wife decided to move to the Town of Herbert over three and a half years ago and have enjoyed being closer to family, as well as becoming passionate about the community.

The former automotive technician noted that he isn't interested in the position for financial reasons, but rather to develop and further improve the town.

"I've kind of got the inner workings of how things are operating and I decided I've got the time and expertise that I think I can do a good job," he shared. "Our current mayor has been doing this for eight years, I think it's time for a change."

If elected, Becker would like to focus on working towards much-needed paving on Herbert's main street as well as upgrading and maintaining recreation, such as replacing the 40-year-old park.

"I think some of our councillors don't feel empowered to really excel in their job," he added, expressing a need for teamwork and for voices to be heard. "Communication is an issue with our council, I think, we've got to get in touch with each other.

"One of the most important things to me is to make sure our town council is educated, connected, and empowered to make smart decisions."

The mayoral candidate has been heavily involved in community work and volunteering since the age of 14. Volunteering with the Abbotsford Air Show, the Air Cadets, and New Horizons, and currently sitting as the vice chair for the Herbert Heritage Association.

Becker was seen at the candidates forum that took place last week and highlighted that he also has posters up and is easily approachable.
