Five kids were able to become Fire Chief for a Day with the Swift Current Fire Department.
The kids get to spend a day, touring the Fire Department and learning from the firefighters. They get to inspect the firetrucks and equipment, learn how everything works, and get to peak behind the curtain at how they operate day to day.
Deputy Fire Chief for the Swift Current Fire Department, Dean Diguer, has been leading Riya, Ethan, Rudy, Kenzie, and Maize around Swift Current.
"It's certainly different than a regular day of school for them," said Diguer. "There always seems to be an interest in what we do at their age, That's why it's typically a fun day for everyone involved."
Not only did Diguer let them tour the fire hall, but he took them to meet the Swift Current Broncos.
"They've always been a fantastic supporter of this for us," said Diguer.
Later after that, the kids got to sit down with Swift Current Mayor Al Bridal at Swift Current City Hall. They asked him all the questions they could come up with, about what he does, what the City gets up to, and if he knew their parents.
These kids are able to enjoy being Deputy Fire Chiefs after having won the opportunity during Fire Prevention Week.
"This gives us a bit more traction to extend our safety messaging with this program," said Diguer.
After they were done needling the Mayor, the kids got to go for lunch together and go over the questions they had asked, what they learned, and what they got to take away from the experience.
"As long as it's a memorable experience for them," said Diguer. "Whether it does drive future career decisions, in the fire industry or municipal politics, whatever the case is, we're just trying to make it a memorable day for them."
