As the holiday season approaches, RCMP are urging small business owners to take simple, budget-friendly steps to enhance their security and deter crime without significant expenses.
Recognizing that small businesses may lack resources for high-end security, RCMP has provided practical, affordable tips to improve safety:
- Install security mirrors: Mirrors inside the business improve sightlines, helping staff monitor areas blocked by shelves or aisles.
- Clear sightlines: Minimize posters or displays obstructing views in and out of business, deterring criminals who prefer not to be seen.
- Add security film on glass: Applying film to non-shatter-proof windows or glass doors can delay entry attempts, increasing the chance of detection and reporting.
- Use pry guards on doors: Full-length pry guards make forced entry more challenging, adding a layer of security.
- Install solar LED lights: These are affordable and wire-free, and they help reduce hiding spots and illuminate entry points.
- Research security cameras: Effective security cameras tailored to your needs (e.g., low-light or extreme weather) are valuable, but be aware that many affordable models may require a subscription for storage.
- Upgrade to disc locks for storage: These locks provide better protection for sheds or storage containers, making it harder for criminals to cut through.
- Maintain landscaping: Trim trees and shrubs to eliminate hiding spots—bushes should be kept under two feet, and tree branches should be trimmed up to six feet from the ground.
- Ensure prompt snow removal: Clearing snow shows that the premises are maintained and regularly accessed.
- Install perimeter alarms: Tailored alarms that monitor key entry points alert owners immediately to unauthorized access.
"These affordable improvements can make a significant difference in protecting businesses and creating a safer environment for staff and customers," Mounties added.
