Golf courses in the region are busy preparing for the long, cold winter months ahead.
Kerry Ward is the general manager of the Lacombe Golf & Country Club.
He says the 2024 golf season started out slow with cool and windy weather before it turned hot and sunny. Ward notes they hosted plenty of corporate and charitable events, adding membership was strong at around 400.
"The golf course was in excellent condition right from opening day until closing day," said Ward. "Connor Winslow, our superintendent, and his turf care team did a remarkable job and with the amount of traffic flow that the property has experienced over the last three or four years, it's holding up very nice."
Ward says the Lacombe Golf & Country Club attracts golfers from across Alberta and brings in tourists from surrounding provinces as well.
He notes one of the highlights from the past season was the installation of 60 new power carts that run on a new quiet technology. The carts are gas powered, running one decibel louder than an electric cart.
Staff have been busy getting the course ready for the winter, which includes aeration, and covering the greens with sand and some with tarps for added protection.
The Lacombe Golf and Country Club will celebrate its 100-year anniversary in 2025.
"There's a centennial committee that has done a tremendous amount of work," explained Ward. "They've been instrumental in helping put everything together for next year. Put in a lot of time and genuine interest for next year."
Lacombe will host the Mid-Master provincial championship in 2025. There will also be a gala weekend held to celebrate the history of the club.
