Impaired driving can be deadly, especially during the holiday season with slippery conditions and frigid weather.

With the holiday season creeping up on the province SGI is taking the time to remind drivers to plan a safe ride home after having some fun.

Impaired driving is a serious issue, especially around the colder months when walking home becomes a less attractive option.

SGI Communications Consultant Jeremy Pilon says they're looking to tell people that there are plenty of options.

“In particular, we want to remind people the role that they can have in helping themselves and their friends get home safe by being designated driver, that safe driver home, at the end of the night when people have been out celebrating and having a good time.”

According to SGI, there has been an average of 31 deaths and over 350 injuries per year as a result of impaired driving in Saskatchewan over the last five years. Drug or alcohol impairment was also a factor in 32 per cent of traffic fatalities in the province.

There are a number of ways people can make sure they're staying safe.

"If you're in an urban area, there's things like transit, rideshares, taxis, things like that, even if you're close to home, walking home might be an option for you. As we get into the holiday season there will be other programs in place like Operation Red Nose or Ring in the New Year."

In more rural areas, Pilon says options are slim, options like getting a designated driver before the night begins or staying the night at a friend or family member’s house can work well no matter where you are.
